The COVID-19 Chronicles
"COVID-19 Chronicles" documents my journey as a visually-impaired producer navigating music and life during the pandemic. In this post, I'll share how I created a sample flip type beat with electronic hip hop soul vibes using Reason Studios.
The Creative Process
Using Reason 10, I combined tools like the NN-XT Advanced Sampler and DopeSONIX Beat Machine to craft a groove-heavy instrumental. I humanized the drums, chopped samples irregularly, and added soulful layers to build an engaging track.
How to Avoid Beat Block
Beat "sketching" is my go-to technique for avoiding beat block. Here's what works for me:
- Switch between creative (music) and logical (web development) tasks.
- Engage fully by playing instruments by hand to humanize the feel.
- Take breaks when needed—sometimes a quick nap can work wonders!
Sample Flipping Techniques
I used the NN-XT Advanced Sampler for its flexibility in chopping and flipping samples. By experimenting with irregular chops, I created unique patterns and developed grooves that stand out.
