The Making Of "Rollin" Sample Flip Beat

Here's a video series with videos showing the making of the Moody instruMental Music Remake of Amerie's Can We Go and explaining the sample flip process and beat arrangement.

Sample Flip in Propellerhead Reason

Sample Flipping using Propellerhead Reason software with the Akai MPD32 Pad controller.

Chop Samples in ReCycle 2.1

Sony Soundforge was the WAV editor I used for everything when it came to chopping samples. Now, I use Propellerhead ReCycle because it is easier to chop the samples and save them in the REX file format used by the Reason NN-XT and DrRex devices.

ReCycle 2.1 Auto-slice Feature

While I am used to slicing my samples manually, ReCycle has an "auto-slice" feature that uses the sample transients to do the chopping. I rarely use this feature. But when I do, i use it to discover and explore sample slices that I was not thinking of. It's a cool way to chop samples randomly.

The "Fake" MPC Feel

When I started sample flippingin Reason, I used what i had - the Yamaha DJX MIDI Keyboard - as a controller. However, the Akai MPC feel was what I was aiming for. I didn't want to buy a standalone sampler, though.

A basic MPC feature is the ability to play a sample slice completely, without holding the pad (trigger) down. Another basic feature is the ability to cancel the play of a previously triggered sample - at any point - when you triggeranother sample. Trying to ewrite an explanation of these basic features is way more complicated than the features! But this is part of what makes the MPC special. Having this abilityliterally changed the way i make music and changed my music.

i l;earned how to create the "Fake" MPC Feel using the NN-XT Advanced Sampler, while using almost any keyboard I have as a MIDI controller. In the video, I walk you through the steps to set this up. I often use the DrREX device to get this functionality, too. The setup steps are very similar.

Load Samples In The NN-XT Advanced Sampler

The NN-XT make Sample Flipping in Propellerhead Reason fun. The level of control that I have over each individual sample slice is what makes the NN-XT my go-to device in Reason for any king of sampling.

i show you how I load REX sample slices into the NN-XT.

Select Zone Via MIDI In NN-XT Advanced Sampler

Select Zone via MIDI is a feature of the NN-XT that allows tweaking of an individual sample slice. This feature is also useful when you need to see which slice is actually being triggered.

Beat Breakdown: A Guided Tour

One of the things I enjoy doing is providing a walkthrough of the beats and music I create. The Beat Breakdowns are like guided tours of the arrangement. I think of these videos like me doing the "Director's Cut" for a movie.

In my videos, I explain a lot about HOW I did what I did when creatin music or making a beat. In the Beat Breakdowns, I break down the beat and talk about my intentions, WHY I did what I did while making the beat.

in this video, I walk you through the entuire beat arrangement. It is important to see and understand how much music production switches contexts, between the "big picture" view to the "micro" view. By showing the arrangement, i hope to help you see and feel how the beat moves and feels from beginning to end.

The Beat Without The Sample

I make smple flip beats and beat tutorial videos like this one to show you how I makebeats and music with Propellerhead Reason. I'm sharing what I learned how to do, hoping that this information helps take time off the learning curve.

The tutorial videos are for educational purposes.  For example, this video educates you on how to remake the sample flip heard in the original Amerie song, "Can We Go Back." I demonstrate how much the sample makes a difference in this beat by playing the beat without the sample. The resulting sample flip beat is also for educational purposes.

Many times, people want to buy the beat that I created in the video. With Sample Flip Beats, i can only sell the part of the beat that I created. I have to mention that again.

With Sample Flip Beats, I only sell the part of the beat that I created.

If you want to buy a license to use any of the sample flip beats I created, I will sell you the beat without the sample and deliver it to you with the lease agreement.

I can customize my beats for your needs, by adding instrumentation, re-arranging, changing tempo, etc.
